My experiences as a day patient at St Albans Hospital have all been positive. They include two cataract removal surgeries and three for relief of carpal tunnel syndrome. Surgeons work both here and in private practice and I can't believe that private patients receive any better use of their skills than I have as an NHS one. Nursing staff are well versed in dealing with each speciality, with the small wards having nurses dedicated to each so that they can answer questions or deal with anxieties while patients wait for their turn to come. Post-op cups of tea and toast are offered without hesitation and care is taken that recovery is given sufficient time before anyone leaves. My wish is that the main part of the hospital could be re-opened and finances allocated from central government to allow so high a standard of care to be given to residents of the city once again without their having to travel to (and from) hospitals elsewhere.

Staff were sensitive to individual needs and treated clients with respect. They worked quietly and efficiently. They explained information clearly and were very approachable.

During 14 years of my condition history I have never left hospital doubting myself. The doctor I was seeing didn't help in the slightest, the waiting queue is longer than 6 months, what a waste of time. He had a bad day, and I felt he was steaming out during my consultation. He didn't want to listen to my situation, nor did he care. I am utterly disappointed, never going back. Not recommended!

Review of Pre-Op Assessment - St Albans written by a patient

Better explanation from staff about what they are doing and why they are doing it. Paper work that requires completion by patients could be provided in advance and , where appropriate, online to minimise delay. Where choices are to be made by the patient it should be clearly put as a question rather than an assumption being made by staff.

Review of Day Surgery - St Albans - 0551 written by a patient

The ward and nursing staff were exemplary. I could not wish for better treatment I have a couple of issues, the first of which is probably unresolvable. I attended before 0730 and when Mr Kosmin had seen us all, he put us in surgery order. I went for my surgery at about 1145 - it was a long wait. A second issue was with the anaesthetist. I was to be sedated as I had occasional clonic spasms which would have been disastrous if one occurred during surgery. The sedation was useless, I could see everything that happened and felt some of it as well. I was tense during the procedure. Other patients who had sedation felt nothing and were surprised when it was over. I don't knpow what the anaesthetist gave me but it didn't work! The last point is concerning the pack of information I was given on discharge. The information and the explanation by the nursing staff was excellent. I am commenting on the pack 5 sterile gauze swabs the pack contained. I have to use three at a time, four times a day for 14 days. My wife went to three local chemists to purchase more and was unable to do so, as they didn't have them. All said they would get them but the next day. There was no indication beforehand that we needed to purchase some, If we had been told then we could have got some in advance. As I could obviuosly not drive, my 70 year old wife, exhausted herself running round to find some. Apart from those comments I can compliment all the staff (except the anaesthetist) on a 100% visit.
